Diseases of the Nose and Throat

The common diseases off the Nose and Throat are ..

a)EPISTAXIS.

b)LARYNGITIS.

c)STOMATITIS.

d)TONSILLITIS.

EPISTAXIS:

Bleeding from the nose is termed as EPISTAXIS. It is common in young people especially in summer. It is rare in elderly persons. The cause for epistaxis mae be an injury.

Remedies :

-Inhale deeply the juice of flowers of pomegranate.

-Let the patient wash his face and head with cold water.

-While bleeding do not sneeze or put any strain on the nose.

-Jiuce of Durva grass is beneficial. Put 5 to 10 drops of the juice in each nostril.

-If the patient has high B.P. , allow him to take medical advice.

LARYNGITIS:

Inflammation of the larynse or the voice box is Laryngitis. This may last for a week. Avoid talking and smoking. The symptom is a hourse voice and or sore throat.

Remedies :

-Inhale the vapours of hot water.Little eucalyptus oil may be added to hot water.

-Steam inhalation of turmeric water is useful.

-Put some black pepper powder to a cup of warm milk and drink the mixture twice a day.

-Due to heavy smoking chronic Laryngities may occur. hence avoid smoking and bad habits like pan chewing, gutkha etc.,

STOMATITIS:

Stomatitis is sore tongue. The tongue turns red. There shall be chemical irritation of tongue. The inflammation of the mouth is also said to be stomatitis. The tongue and the roof of the mouth or palate is affected. There will be pain and difficulty in swallowing. Foul smell of the mouth is another symptom.

Remedies :

-Use toothpaste or powder made of neem.

-Avoid use of tobacco.

-Use plenty of green vegetables and fruits.

TONSILLITIS:

Tonsils lie one on each side of the throat. Inflammatory condition of the tonsils is tonsillitis. It is common in children under ten years of age. It may be seen in young adults also.

Symptoms: 1) Throat becomes sore , 2) Difficulty in swallowing food , 3) Fever & headache , 4) Ear ache.

Remedies :

-Milk with turmeric powder is a good home remedy. Black pepper powder may be added.

-Garlic juice with honey is used for cleaning the inflamed tonsils.

Diseases of the Teeth and Gums

The common diseases off the teeth and gums are ..

a)Bad Breath or Halitosis.

b)Tooth Ache.

c)Pyorrhoea or Pus in the gums.

TOOTH ACHE :

It is a most common complaint. Usually children of the age of five to ten suffer from tooth ache as they are fond of eating chacolates , ice creams, sweets and sugar items.

Symptoms:

-Tooth ache may persist whole day and night.

-Tooth ache may be there for a short period or may occur now and then.

-The pain may extend upto ears and head followed by head ache.

Remedies :

-Garlic is supposed to be an effective remedy for tooth ache.It is a pain killer.

-Prepare a paste from one or two garlic cloves and apply it along with a little bit os salt on the affected tooth.

-Mix 5ml each of clove oil and eucalyptus oil with some menthol and water.Use the mixture for gargling.

-Avoid using sugar items, sour food annd ice creams.

PYORRHOEA :

is a disease of the gums. The disease leads to loosening of the teeth,pus formation and shrinkage of the gum.One may loose teeth.

Poor oral hygiene is the main cause of pyorrhoea.One may avoid this disease by proper brushing the teeth daily and cleaning the mouth after intake of food.

Symptoms:

-Foul smell in the mouth.

-Loss of teeth one by one.

-Difficulty in chewing food.

-Pain and bleeding from the gums.

-Diarrhoea.

-Gastritis.

Remedies:

-Brush teeth regularly

-Using prop-root of Banyan tree or twigs of neem for brushing teeth is very much useful.

-Take food rich in vitamin C. Lemon is useful.

-Better avoid things which stick to the roots of teeth.

-Powder the dry rind of pomegranate.Add pepper and common salt.Its application strengthens the gums ,stops bleeding.

-Wheat chapatis,spinach juice,leaves of lettuce have been found useful in prevention of pyorrhoea.

HALITOSIS (BREATH Prevails)

Halitosis or breath prevails due to the following reasons...

-Poor care of teeth and gums.

-Eating much flavoured foods.

-Eating garlic or onions.

-Chronic constipation.

-Diseased gums.

-Respiratory inspections.

-Lung diseases like chronic bronchitis etc.

-Gastro intestinal disorders.

Unpleasantly odoured breath and objectionable odour are the symptoms of this disease. Though Halitosis is a harmless condition, but one should avoid it and keep the body clean.

Remedies:

-Take a well balanced diet and avoid refined carbo hydrate foods.

-Avoid constipation.

-All fruit and vegetable juices are useful in the treatment of bad breath.

-Clean teeth regularly with a good paste twice a day , especially before going to bed.

-Green cardamom is a good mouth freshnes.

-Unripe gauva is valuable in halitosis.

-Use tooth picks to remove the trapped particles.

-The use of the twings of neem tree as a toothbrush is a good remedy.

DANDRUFF

Dandruff is a disease of the skin and hair of the upper part of the head or scalp. There will be formation of scales.

On scratching there will be burning and itching sensation. Dandruff can occur at any age but it is very common among the young. When the hair combed the scales fall like snow flakes and settle on cloths.

Remedies:

  • Cleanliness of combs.

  • Coconut oil is effective external usage.

  • Fenugreek seeds: Take two table spoons of fenugreek seeds and soak the seeds in water overnight.Ground them into a paste next day. Apply the paste all over the scalp and leave it for half an hour. Then wash the hair with soapnut powder solution.

  • Do not wash the hair too often.

  • Use one teaspoon of fresh lime juice while washing the hair. This is a valuable remedy. This prevents dandruff.

  • Keep the hair and scalp clean to minimise the accumulation of dead cells.

  • Avoid refined foods, condiments strong coffee or tea.

  • Do not use harsh shampoos.

    Head ache

    We cannot find a person in this world who is not affected by head ache at least once in his lifetime. Perhaps , headache is the most common complaint.The causes for headache are many. However, not all the types of headachees are harmful. Majority of the headaches are harmless.The only thing is that the headache should not be continuous. If it is so , common remeedies do not cure such headaches.

    The common causes for headache are tension, long journey, sun, sleeplessness, infection , eye strain, emotional stress, high bolld pressure, allergy, fatigue, overwork and anxiety.

    Remedies:

  • Lemon jiuce is beneficial in the treatment of headache.

  • Prepare a fine paste of cinnamon by mixing it with water. Apply it over the forehead. It gives relief.

  • Avoid cold items like cold water, cool drinks, curds and ice creams when affected.

  • The flowers of Henna rubbed in vinegar should be applied over the forehead. It is found valuable in headaches.

  • The headache affected person should not take bath in cold water.

  • Hot foot baths are useful.

  • Useful Yogasanas : Halasana, Sarvangasana, Shavasana and Uttanapadasana.

    PUS in the EAR

    Pus in the ear is due to inflammation of the ear. it is caused by viruses and bacteria. Also due to cough,cold and sinusitis.

    Some times there will be foul smelling pus. There may be a vomiting sensation in this situation. There will be unbearable pain in the ear.

    Remedies:

  • Avoid taking bath.

  • Do not face cold wind.

  • Garlic covered by cotton may be kept in the ear to avoid cold wind passing into the ear.

  • Garlic and onions should be used in your diet.

  • Clean ear with luke warm water and put 3 to 5 drops of Kshara tail Baidyanath in the morning and evening. This is an Ayurvedic remedy.

    Acidity

    Acidity is a common disorder found in many people. Whenever hydrochloric acid is produced in excess, acidity is the result.The acid is an important constituent of the digestive juices. In take of hot,spicy,fried food,sweets,fermented food,alcohol is one of the causes of acidity.Also excessive drinking of tea or coffee,smoking,eating more onions and garlic are the causes of hyper acidity.

    Vomiting,headache,lack of appetite,burning sensation in the chest and belching are the signs of the disease.

    Remedies:

  • Take tender coconut water.

  • Little sugar or cold water with sugar reduces the acidity level.

  • Sip cold milk during the day and before going to bed.

  • Take Drakshadi Lehyam (Dabur's) one teaspoon twice a day with milk.

    Intestinal Worms

    This is a common disease found all over the world. Children are the major victims of this disease. The worms namely round worms,hook worms,thread worms and tape worms are parasites and they seek shelter in human beings. The eggs of these parasites enter into the human beings through the food or water sanitation and lack of personal hygiene are cheif causes of the disease. When you walk bare footed on injected earth hook worms enter your body. Tape worms enter the human body through under cooked flesh foods.

    Symptoms : Foul breath, diarrhoea, anaemia, pain in the abdomen, vomiting , loss of appetite, loss of weight, desire for food, restlessness at night, head aches, fever, cough in some cases, dark circles under the eyes.

    Remedies:

  • Garlic is the best remedy to expel intestinal worms. Chew three cloves of fresh garlic every day. Garlic oil is also effective.

  • Use apple every day in your diet.

  • Tender coconut water mixed with little honey is useful in expelling worms.

  • Avoid sweets.

  • As worms are widely prevalent in rainy season, do not forget to use boiled water.

  • Take one table spoon of ripe pumpkinseeds. Remove the outer skin of all seeds and crush them. Put them in a bowl of boiling water and drink. this juice is a good remedy for removing tape worms.

  • Thread worms can be removed by eating enough carrots.

  • Eat a small cup of grated carrot every morning.

  • If unripe papaya slices are taken with salt and black pepper powder the round worms will come out.

  • Papaya seeds are also useful in expelling round worms. They contain a substance called caricin. Dry papaya seeds and powder them. Add sugar and eat. The seeds should be powdered and taken in doses of one teaspoon with one cup of milk or water daily in the morning.

    Indigestion

    Causes :

    Indigestion can be caused by any of the following reasons...

  • Improper eating habits.

  • Eating a lot of fried foods,meat,sweets,heavy foods and overeating.

    Symptoms :

  • Feeling of heaviness or uneasiness in the stomach.

    Remedies :

  • Fasting completely for one day is an efficient method to digest.

  • Taking fruits, fruit juices and boiled vegetables for one week is also a very beneficial way of fasting.

  • Lemon juice mixed in warm water taken three times a day improves digestion.

  • Chewing a small piece of fresh ginger with salt,five to ten minutes before meals,stimulates digestion..

  • Take equal amounts of ginger powder, black pepper, dried mint leaves, asafetida (hing), anise seeds,coriander seeds, cumin, fennel and common salt. Grind together to make a fine powder.


    Dosage -

  • Take about 1 teaspoon of this powder with water, twice a day after meals. Drinking buttermilk after a meal improves digestion. Roasted cumin seeds and a little salt in the buttermilk enhances its effectiveness..

  • Drinking water gives immediate relief to symptoms like wind,distended stomach and acidity.Eat half a teaspoon of aniseed to improve digestion..

  • A teaspoon of ginger juice mixed in a quarter cup of warm water can be taken two or three times a day.

  • A teaspoon of lemon juice and a pinch of salt can also be added to make it more effective.

    Do's and don'ts :

  • Eat boiled seasonal vegetables, fruits, fruit juices and lemon juice. Spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, fresh ginger, black pepper and asafetida.

  • Physical exercise, according to the strength and energy of the patient,is beneficial.

  • Do not eat while moving or traveling in a car, watching television or reading.

  • Do not eat fast food or food that has been cooked in a microwave oven.

  • Eating should not be too fast or too slow and the food should be properly chewed.

  • Sleeping during the day, especially after lunch is not recommended, as it produces indigestion.

  • Onions too can relieve you

    Sounds strange but true!! Raw onion is beneficial to fight cough. Chop it fine and extract the juice out of the onion. Mix one teaspoon of the juice with one teaspoon of honey and keep for four or five hours. This makes an excellent cough syrup; take this twice daily till your throat sends signal of normalcy.

  • Our very own Turmeric

    Roast the root of the turmeric and prepare a fine powder out of it. Take this powder in three gram doses twice daily, in the morning and evening. This will help fight your cough too.

  • Raisin Wonder

    A sauce prepared from raisins is also useful in a cough. Prepare this by grinding 100 gm of raisins with water. Mix about 100 gm of sugar to it and heat the mixture. When the mixture acquires a sauce-like consistency, remove from heat and preserve it. Take around twenty grams of the same before going to bed daily till you feel free of the cough.

  • Try Aniseed

    Aniseed is another effective remedy for a hard dry cough. Take tea made from this spice regularly till the cough subsides.
